Luther was declared a heretic and an outlaw(out of the protection of the law).On his way home he disappeared. In fact he was rescued by Frederick, the Elector of Saxony
Martin Luther’s beliefs
- Justification by Faith Alone
- Bible was the only source of God’s teaching - vernacular
- No priests or hierarchy. He simply relied on ministers to preach the Scriptures “The Priesthood of all Believers”
- Replaced the Latin Mass with a Communion service in German
- Two sacraments- Baptism and Eucharist
- He believed in Consubstantiation and Christians believed in Transubstantiation
- Married clergy
- Indulgences, praying to statues and wearing of special clothing store were banned
