Stage 1 of Alzheimer's

No impairment. Not detectable and no memory problems evident

Stage 2 of Alzheimer's

Very mild decline. Minor memory problems, lose things around the house,

3rd stage of Alzheimer's

Mild decline. Family members may begin to notice memory or cognitive problems. May have difficult finding the right words in conversation, names or planning and organizing

Stage 4 Alzheimer's

Moderate decline. Clear symptoms apparent. Forget life history, poor short term memory, inability to manage bills

Stage 5 of Alzheimer's

Moderately sever decline. Need help in day to day activities. Significant confusion, can't recall simple details about themselves, difficulty dressing appropriately

Stage 6 Alzheimer's

Sever decline. Need constant supervision, confusion, unawareness of surroundings, wandering, need assistance, behavior problems

Stage 7 Alzheimer's

Very severe decline. Terminal illness and final stage, patients lose ability to communicate and respond to environment, need assistance with all activities of daily living, may lose ability to swallow

What other concepts relate to cognition and why?

Safety, fluid and electrolytes, inflammation

Refers to various organic disorders that progressively affect cognitive functioning. Chronic and usually develops gradually

Dementia

Form of dementia. The most common degenerative neurological illness and the most common cause of cognitive impairment. Irreversible and progresses from deficits in memory and thinking skills to eventually cause inability to perform simple tasks
