A loss of a spouse or partner impacts a seniors mental health by a feeling of “ losing apart of ones self” . Which then can result in feeling of loss and grief for surviving individuals. Depression and grief can have consequences such as sleep and loss of appetite. It’s a difficult adjustment for couples when various responsibilities were shared and now have to take an unfamiliar tasks. The death of a spouse can result in “ broken heart syndrome”

A

Widows can be supported by adult children, other family members, or friends who are around them to help to ensure that their needs are being met. When and if this is not available to the widow they are at risk of becoming isolated and disconnected . Those who don’t have resources such as income, retirement savings are forced to rely on shelters, housing supports, or charitable agencies.

Prenatal care is so important because it provides proper nutrition to both infant and mother. Also an environment free from toxins to ensure the development of a healthy fetus. That is why it is important to have a healthy fetal development.

    - First Nations feel unsafe to reach out and get help from a health care system run by professionals because of historical conflicts in the past.
  2. Stigma
    - feelings of shame about mental health deter from seeking help
  3. Unware of available help
    - some would find it hard to find available help and unware of such help even exist and may seek help from their traditional healers

A

DSM-5 is controversial because they loosened the criteria in such a way that more people may now receive psychiatric diagnosis instead of considered normal. This results in more medication misuse.

A

The benefits of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is to help develop self esteem with oneself, it helps gain control of ones thoughts taking away unrealistic thoughts for more beneficial thought process. It gives hope and regulates behaviour. This therapy is used for major depression and anxiety.

A

As a support worker I feel that our role is helping the client by being a helping hand, being observant to their needs, to guide them, support them in their well being and self care needs . To show empathy and care.
