Flashcards in Metals🔩🔧🔨 Deck (11):
What is a Ferrous Metal
A metal that contains Iron, meaning they are magnetic. They are also prone to rusting due to Iron oxidising in the air.
Which Ferrous metal doesn't rust
Stainless Steel. Stainless Steel os a Ferrous metal alloy
Examples of Ferrous metals that rust
Mild Steel, medium Carbon, Steel
What metals does Stainless Steel contain
72% Steel, 18% Chromium and 10% Nickel. Tje Chromium forms an impenetrable oxide outer layer, preventing rust.
What are Non-Ferrous metals
They do not contain Iron, which also means they are not magnetic and they do not rust, but some of them do oxidise on the surface and will change colour until the oxide layer is cleaned off.
What colour is Copper
Yellow. But will tarnish (go green verdigris) over time when exposed to air
Examples of Non-Ferrous metals
Tin, Aluminium, Titanium and Platinum.
What is an Alloy
Contains two or more different metals. The combined good properties of two metals make an alloy with combined superior qualities.
Example of an Alloy
What metals contain Brass
65% Copper and 35% Zinc
