He shrunk the empire. He fought in many expensive wars so this caused economic problems. There was also disease and drought

Men became jealous of the Popes’ power so they beat him, Charlamagne came to his rescue, and then the pope to thank him crowned him emperor
What was the Main role of monasteries and the monks living within them?
The monks where supposed to stay silent and worship. They where also supposed to hold ceremonies to help clense the people.
What is Feudalism?
This is the agreement between Vassals and their Lords. It was the basis of European societies
How did William the conquerer change England after becoming king?
William claimed rights for the normans. He also created a detailed census book. He also made England a world power.
What was the major effect of the Crusades?
The increase in trade would end feudalism and kings would gain more power. The Church also lost power
What was the overall purpose of the Crusades?
The purpose was for Europe to take back the promised land that many different religions wanted
Describe the Magna Carta and its significance
The king was abusing his power and so the nobels convinced the king to sign a document that guaranteed rights for the people and put the king in his place
What effect did the Bubonic plague have on European life during the middle ages?
The plague killed thousands and caused their to be a rise in the peasant wages because they needed their work to survive themselves
Which social classes became more powerful as feudalism declined?
The peasant and the rise of the middle class became more powerful because they got more freedom now that they were not stuck one place

This was a war between England and France. Many people gained the idea of nationalism and pride in their country.

This was a girl who received visions from god that helped the french gain back territory from England
What were two effects of Ferdinand and Isabella’s reign of Spain?
They forced Jews and Muslims to become Christian. They also would torture them/kill them if they would not convert or leave
What action by an English King gave ordinary people a voice in the government?
The Magna Carta was signed which gave nobles and some peasants a voice in the government
Describe a Manor System
A manor is a self-sufficient farming estate where the lord and the peasants live on the land together. It rested on a set of obligations between the lord and his serfs.

The Quran: A holy book that is a collection of Muhammad’s teachings
The Sunnah: A book that gave the framework for morality

The Sunni Muslims believed that the power of the Caliph should be earned by hard work and not given. They wanted Abu Bakr as the new Caliph. Most people believe in this
Shia Muslims
The Shia Muslims believe that the power of the Caliph should be related to Muhammad the prophet. They wanted Ali as the next Caliph. Fewer people belive in this
Similarities between the Shia and Sunni Muslims
They both shared the same fundamental beliefs of a Muslim. They all believed in the same god. Holy cities such as Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem
