Hierarchy of Needs

physiological needs, safety needs, belongings and love needs, esteem needs, and self actualization

Physiological needs

food, water, sex, basic survival needs, major concern for poor people and those in third world countries

Safety needs

security, order and stability, important drives for infants and neurotic adults

Belongingness and love needs

need to give and receive love, expressed through lover or mate and social relationships in groups, failure to meet this need is a fundamental cause of emotional maladjustment

Self-determination theory

contemporary outgrowth of self-actualization theory, facilitated by intrinsic motivation, 3 basic needs, competence, autonomy, and relatedness

Actualization tendency

basic human motivation to actualize, maintain, and enhance the self. process involves difficult growth

Organismic valuing process

process of judging based on value for actualization and growth

Phenomenology

only reliable reality is subjective experience and inner perception of reality, our experiences become the only basis for our judgments and behavior

Positive regard

acceptance, love, and approval from others, universal and persistent need

Unconditional positive regard

approval regardless of one's behavior

Positive self regard

condition under which we grant ourselves acceptance and approval

Conditions of worth

belief that we are only worthy approval for desirable behaviors and attitudes

Conditional positive regard

approval and acceptance granted only when person exhibits desirable behaviors

Incongruence

discrepancy between self concept and experience

Fully functioning person

self actualization, developing all facets of the self, desired result of psychological development

Characterisitics of fully functioning persons

aware of all experience, live richly and fully in every moment, trust in own organism, feel free to make choices, are creative and live constructively, and may face difficulties

Person centered therapy

therapy approach, client is assumed to be responsible for changing, focus on subjective experience

Encounter groups

group therapy for learning about feelings and relating, others developed tests and experience

responses made to or elicited by environmental stimuli
