Six migration strategies
- rehost
- replatform
- retire
- retain
- repurchase
- refactor/re-architect
Rehosting
migration strategy, lift-and-shift - move apps without changing
- easier at the beginning
- not all benefits of the cloud, but still up to 30% cost savings
Replatforming
migration strategy - lift-tinker-and-shift - make a few cloud optimizations without changing the core architecture of the app.
Example: MySQL DB -> RDS MySQL without code changes.
Or MySQL DB -> Aurora
Retiring
migration strategy where obsolete applications are disabled (10-20% app porfolio)
Retaining
migration strategy for apps which are soon to be deprecated. It doesn’t make sense to migrate.
Repurchasing
Migration strategy where legacy software vendors are abandoned and model is changed from license to SaaS.
Higher upfront cost.
Refactoring / Re-architecturing
Migration strategy where applications are developed using cloud-native features. Useful where there’s a business need to add features, scale, or improve performance.
Highest initial cost.
