Meninges
Three CT layers deep to cranium and vertebral canal that encase brain and spinal cord
Dura mater
Though outer meninges
Arachnoid mater
Middle meninges. Separated CSF from blood
Pia mater
Delicate outer coating of the brain and the innermost meninges
Epidural space
Space between vertebrae and dura mater. Holds areolar CT, adipose CT, arteries, veins. Potential space between cranial bones and dura mater
Subarachnoid space
Contains CSF
Arachnoid granulation
Contains CSF and allows fluid to be resorbed into blood of dura venous sinuses
Flax cerebri
Keeps brain from moving too much within cranium
Sagittal sinus
Drains deoxygenated blood from brain. Contains arachnoid granulations that drain CSF into blood
Anterior root of spinal nerve
Contains motor neuron axons
Posterior root ganglion of spinal nerve
Contains sensory neuron cell bodies
Central canal of spinal cord
Contains CSF
Frontal lobe of cerebrum
Responsible for higher intellectual functions, personality, voluntary motor control of skeletal muscles
Parietal lobe of cerebrum
Interpretation of general sensory info (texture and shapes)
Temporal lobe of cerebrum
Interpretation and storage of auditory and olfactory sensations
Occipital lobe of cerebrum
Interpretation and storage of visual sensations
Insula
Interpretation of taste sensation. Participates in memory
Central sulcus
Separates frontal and parietal lobes of cerebrum
Precentral gyrus
Somatomotor area. Control of skeletal muscles
Postcentral gyrus
Somatosensory area. General sensory perception
Lateral sulcus
Separates temporal lobes from frontal and parietal
Corpus callosum
White matter connecting cerebral hemispheres. Main communication link between hemispheres
Choroid plexuses
Forms CSF
Pons
Contains sensory and motor tracts running between brain and spinal cord. Regulates breathing
Medusa oblongata
Contains autonomic centers that regulate heart rate, blood pressure, respiration
Cerebellum
Coordinated and smooths complex motor movements. Receives and interprets proprioceptive info
Cerebrum
Integrative center of the brain that receives and interprets sensory info, draws upon memory and learns and initiates motor responses
CSF
Absorbs jarring movements of the head
