What is the symptom of acute pericarditis?

Sharp pain aggravated by inspiration


How is pericarditis relieved?

Sitting up and leaning forward


What are the three kinds of acute pericarditis?

  • Fibrinous
    • Most frequent
    • Presents with loud friction rub
  • Serous
    • From non-infectious inflammatory diseases
  • Suppurative/Purulent
    • Caused by infectious agents


What is cardiac tamponade?

Compression of heart by fluid in pericardium leading to decreased CO


What are the clinical findings in cardiac tamponade?

  • Hypotension
  • Increased venous pressure
    • jugularvein distension
  • Distant heart sounds
  • Increased HR
  • Pulsus paradoxus 


What is pulsus paradoxus?

Decreased amplitude of systolic blood pressure by 100mmHg during inspiration


How does syphilis cause heart disease?

Tertiary syphilis disrputs the vasa vasorum of the aorta causing dilation of the aorta and valve ring

Often causes  thoracic aneurysm leading to tree-bark like appearance of aorta


What are varicose veins?

Dilated totruous superficial veins due to chronically increased venous pressure


What do varicose veins predispose an indivual to?

Poor wound healing and varicose ulcers


What is Raynaud's disease?

  • Decreased blood flow to the skin due to arteriolar vasospasm in response to cold temperature or emotional stress
  • Most often in fingers and toes


When is Raynaud's disease called Raynaud's phenomenon?

  • When secondary to:
    • mixed connective tissue disease
    • SLE
    • CREST syndrome
