Q

whats teh difference between a distress scoring sheet and a pain scoring sheet

A
  • distress = more specific - include clinical signs - expected to occur with experiment
  • modification of pain scoreing system - qyuantitative - determine corrective action
  • designed for particular research project

Q

what are some general parameters of the distress scoring sheet

A
  • appearance
  • food adn water intake
  • body weight
  • natural and unprovoked behaviour i.e.nesting, restless, locomotion, interaction, vocalisation, self mutliation
  • provoked behaviour -i.e. - respnse to handling, aggressiveness - humans and other aniamls

6
Q

what clinical signs are inluded on distress scoring sheets

A
  • as they are porject specific - depends on outcome ecamples i.e.
  • infectious disease - look for hypothermia, weight loss, lethargy
  • oncology - tumour growth, ulceration
  • IBd- diarrhoes
  • asthma model - respiratory disease
  • if unknown - PILOT STUDY

Q

EXAMPLE OF SCORING numerical data

A

body weight - up to 10% = sore 1 - mild effect
10-20% loss = score of 2 = moderate effect
- >20% = score 3 = severe

Q

how should distress scoring sheets carried out?

A
  • ensure appropriate observation, consisten, documented
  • scoree sheet = specific for species, strain procedures
  • score sheet - list endpoints
  • endpoint = updated relevant to found suffering
  • culmulative rating - obtained - adding score - increase- deviation from normal = increase pain and distress
  • actions then need to be taken
