1
Q

Role of meninges

A

Covers the outside surface of the brain, offering protection

2
Q

What are the three layers of meninges that cover the brain ? (The layers are the same as in the spinal cord)

A

Dura mater - outter layer
Arachnoid mater - middle layer
Pia mater - Clings tightly to the surface of the brain
(DAP)

3
Q

What are the four chambers of the brain called?

A

Ventricles

4
Q

What is the name of the clear colourless fluid bathing the brain and spinal cord, and what is its role?

A

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) - Acts as a cushion for the brain, and constantly flows through the CNS, providing nourishment and helping to remove metabolic wastes

5
Q

How is cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) produced?

A

Formed from blood by the choroid plexus

6
Q

What are the four major regions the brain is divided into?

A

Cerebrum, diencephalon, cerebellum, brainstem

7
Q

What divides the cerebrum into right and left cerebral hemispheres?

A

A deep groove called longitudinal fissure

8
Q

What connects the two hemispheres of the cerebrum?

A

Corpus callosum

9
Q

What is the role of the gray matter within the cerebrum?

A

Play a role in the control of movement

10
Q

Why are there surface folds on the brain?

A

Allow more gray matter to be packed into the small area of the skull

11
Q

Your ability to think, remember, feel, use judgment, and move can be credited to the

A

Cerebrum

12
Q

What is the role of the frontal lobe?

A

Governs voluntary movements, memory, emotion, decision-making, reasoning and aggression

13
Q

What is the role of the parietal lobe?

A

Receives and interprets bodily sensations, and proprioception (awareness of the body’s position)

14
Q

What is the role of the temporal lobe?

A

Hearing, smell, learning, memory, emotional behavior, and visual recognition

15
Q

What is the role of the insula?

A

Perception, motor control, self-awareness, and cognitive functioning

16
Q

What is the role of the cerebellum?

A

Motor functions - balance, coordination, and posture

Sensory, cognitive, and emotional functions

17
Q

A region deep inside the brain, the diencephalon consists of what 2 chief structures?

A

Thalamus and hypothalamus

18
Q

In regards to what it’s responsible for, the right side of the brain’s is known as

A

The creative side

19
Q

In regards to what it’s responsible for, the left side of the brain’s is known as

A

The analytical side
