Daily manual test

A

User Test

  1. Press on
  2. Press options
  3. Using speed dial, select ‘user test’. Performs self-test of circuitry, charges to 10J and discharges internally. This does not test the integrity of the therapy cable
  4. Sign date and retain printout

  1. Disconnect from QUIK COMBOTM electrodes
  2. Connect to black test load
  3. Press on
  4. Press energy select (ensure 200j is displayed)
  5. Press charge
  6. Press print
  7. Press shock
  8. Confirm the defibrillator discharges
  9. Confirm the printer annotates the time, date and energy selected on the ECG strip
  10. Disconnect from the black test load
  11. Reconnect the QUIK COMBOTM electrodes
  12. Press on to power off

Pre-cordial Thump

  • Confirm arrest, request further resources if appropriate
  • If the rhythm is VF/VT and a defibrillator is not immediately available consider pre-cordial thump

Safety - Environmental Factors defibrillator

A

Be careful to protect yourself and those around you and take into consideration………

  • Water (e.g. puddles)
  • Oxygen cylinders (these should be moved clear and behind the operator - guidelines state 1mtr min.)
  • Metal surfaces including lift floors
  • Direct or indirect contact with the

casualty

Ensure that these hazards are

eliminated before defibrillation!

Dignity and modesty!

A

Check with the patients relatives that no DNACPR is in place.

Try to maintain a patient’s modesty; however, remember that modesty comes secondary to early and safe defibrillation!

Safety - Preparing the Casualty

A
  • Remove clothes from the patient’s chest
  • •Before defibrillation check the casualty’s chest for

–Jewellery (necklaces)

–Medication patches

–Pacemakers

–Underwired Bras

–•Dry the chest

•Shave off excess hair

Switching from AED to manual mode

A

As Technicians you may be backing-up personnel who are using the defibrillator in AED mode; it is important to immediately change the defibrillator to manual mode as the reaction time of the unit is much quicker in manual mode
