module 2 Flashcards

1
Q

What are some safety tips for the home care nurse?

A
  1. Ensure the agency has an itinerary of your route and stops
  2. Be organized
  3. Have a full tank of gas and GPS
  4. Call ahead to ensure the family is aware you are on your way; provide an ETA
  5. Be streetwise
  6. Be aware of what to expect in the home. If you are visiting a 20-year-old new mother who reportedly lives alone and you find a 50-year-old male, ask for the client by name and wait for her presence before entering the home. Use your gut to determine if it is a good idea to proceed.
  7. If at any point in time you feel uncomfortable you can terminate the visit; remove yourself from the home as soon as it is safe

hospice vs. palliative

A

Hospice nurses care for terminal clients at the end of their lives, ensuring the clients quality of life rather than working towards a cure. Their goal is to improve the end of life for their clients, reducing pain, increasing comfort, and helping the patient and their family transition through the process of dying

Palliative nurses care for the terminally ill as well as patients with chronic medical conditions to promote quality of life and relieve suffering. Palliative nurses work in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and private homes - settings where elderly and those with chronic conditions are treated
