Who was Martin Luther?
-reformer
-made Ninety-Five Theses, nailed it to a Church door.
-got excommunicated, went into hiding, then started preaching a Protestant religion known as the Lutheran Church.
What is the Ninety-Five Theses and what does it include?
-list of complaints made by Martin Luther
-Includes:
-No sale of indulgences
-No confession
-No purgatory
What is predestination?
God knows who will be saved before they’re born, and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Why did King Henry VIII leave the Church?
-wanted to divorce wife, Catherine of Aragon, but the Pope said no.
-Leaves the Church and starts the Anglican Church.
What did Spain do when the reformation occurred?
-made other religions leave.
Who was Ignatius of Loyola?
-started Jesuits- men who served under the Pope
What was the Ursuline Order?
-Started by Angela Merici
-educated Catholic girls.
What was the Council of Trent?
-order of clergy that met together to make rules for the church.
Who was St. Francis Xavier?
A Jesuit priest & missionary
What were some effects of the Reformation?
HRE:
-Catholics & Protestants start to fight.
-Thirty Years’ War- series of war that involved many European countries
-Holy Roman Empire fell, land became independent states
-Peasants fight back
-2 Catholic officials were thrown out of a window in Prague
-King tried to make everyone Catholic by closing Protestant Churches
FRANCE:
-Huguenots- French Protestants, fought with Catholics for 20 years
-Saint Bartholomew’s Day- 3,000 Protestants killed on 9-24-1572
-Edict of Nants- created by King Henry IV, let Protestants live & worship in some cities, not all.
Social changes b/c of Reformation?
-Hierarchy of Protestant Churches fell
-Elections occur, Congregation- Church assembly- chose
-Catholic Church power & influence declined.
-Federalism- sharing power between local governments & a central government
