module 3 Flashcards
(31 cards)
made up of cranial and spinal nerves
PNS
nerves that leave the underside of the brain
cranial
nerves which connect to the sides of the spinal cord at each vertebra
spinal
includes the motor neurons that operate the skeletal muscle and the sensory neurons that bring info into the CNS from the body and the outside world
somatic nervous system
controls smooth muscle , the glands, the heart, and other organs
autonomic nervous system
branch of the autonomic nervous system that activates the body in ways to help it cope with demands such as emotional stress and psychological emergencies
sympathetic nervous system
ANS branch that slows down the activity of most organs to conserve energy but also activates digestion to renew energy
parasympathetic nervous system
towards the front of the body/brain
anterior
towards the back of the body/brain
posterior
towards the top of the body/brain
superior
towards the bottom of the body/brain
inferior
toward the middle of the body/brain
medial
towards the sides (away from the middle)
lateral
towards the front of the spinal cord (towards the nose)
rostral
towards the back of the spinal cord (towards the tail)
caudal
towards the front of the spinal cord (stomach) and towards to the top side of the brain
dorsal
towards the back of the spinal cord (back) towards the bottom of the brain
ventral
plane that divides the body into ventral and dorsal
coronal
plane that divides body into top and bottom (3 options)
transverse
axial
horizontal
plane that divides body and brain into left and right
sagittal
same side of the body
ipsilateral
opposite of the body
contralateral
first meninges layer right below the skull
toughest layer
dura mater
meninges layer below the first layer
comprised of connective tissues
arachnoid mater
