What is the respiratory systems 2 main functions?
Bring oxygen gas into the body & export carbon dioxide
Where does gas exchange between inhaled air and blood occur?
Alveoli
What protects the respiratory system?
Thoracic cage
What makes up 78% of air we breath in?
Nitrogen gas
What does nitrogen gas we breath in do?
Help hold airways open
What makes up 21% or air we breath in?
Oxygen gas
What does oxygen gas do?
Required for metabolic activity
What is ventilation?
Movement of air into the lungs
What is ventilations 2 components
Inhalation & exhalation
What happens during external respiration?
Once air is in the lungs, oxygen crosses into bloodstream, then transported around body by cardiovascular system
What happens during internal respiration?
Oxygen is delivered to vital tissues, carbon dioxide crosses into bloodstream for excretion during exhalation
Where is air heated and cooled?
Respiratory region
What important role does the upper airway play?
Smell, sound for vocal cords,passageway for air to lower airways
What 3 regions are found in the nasal cavity?
Vestibular, olfactory, respiratory
What what is the vestibular region responsible for?
First line of defence for the respiratory system! Course nose hairs
What is the olfactory region responsible for?
Sense of smell
What is the respiratory system responsible for?
Air is warmed and humidified
Where is conchae found and what is it?
Found in the respiratory region, has 3 scroll like bones!
What is conchae?
Has 3 channels airflow becomes turbulent while being heated and humidified and is now ready for lower respiratory system
Where does air go after it’s left the nose?
Pharynx
What is the pharynx?
Passageway for air and food
What are the 3 areas in the pharynx?
Nasopharynx, oropharynx and laryngopharynx
What is found in nasopharynx ?
Adenoids
What is found in the oropharynx?
Tonsils
