What are the four software installation best practices?
- Verify that the software is compatible with the operating system.
- Verify that your computer’s hardware meets the application’s recommended system requirements.
- Be sure to check special installation instructions or known issues.
- Verify that I have a valid agreement or licensing to install and use the product.
What are the two special folders for storing system and application files?
1.Windows
2. Program Files
What three things should I remember about “Windows” and “Program Files”?
- The content in these two files should not be altered manually.
- Moving or deleting files in these folders could cause Windows or software applications not to start properly.
- Administrative access is required to access these files.
What four things should I keep in mind regarding installing an application?
- They should be installed using the supplied setup program.
- Only Computer Administrators can install a program.
- I should exit other files and applications.
- I may need to disable anti-virus software.
What two ways are an application’s setup files provided?
- On a disc.
- From a website.
What does UAC stand for?
- User Account Control
- This is what pops up with download options when I’m downloading an application.
What is a digital certificate?
A digital passport that confirms authenticity and allows for secure data exchange over the internet.
Three things about “Advanced Options”.
- The opposite of default installation.
- Also called custom installation.
- Allows you to choose specific settings.
Where are apps installed and managed?
In Microsoft Store.
If someone installs an application and has trouble running it what can I do to inspect it.
Go into File Explorer and right-click on the file, then select “Properties”. Inside Properties I can use the “Details” tab to troubleshoot the issue. If I need to run the application in compatibility mode I can click on the “Compatibility” tab and adjust the display settings.
If a software program stops working, what is usually the best solution?
Uninstall the program then reinstall it.
What is a “patch”?
A small piece of software code designed to fix a specific problem or vulnerability within a larger program.
How do I uninstall a program?
Go to “Control Panel” then select “Programs and Features”. Select the icon of the program you want deleted, then choose the appropriate action. I also need to close any applications or files installed by the application. I may also need to uninstall anti-virus software although not Windows Defender.
What two programs might I want to uninstall?
- Bloatware (A new PC may come with bundle software programs and trial versions).
- Programs no longer in use.
If uninstalling and reinstalling a program doesn’t work what should I try next?
I should perform a “clean uninstall” ( Essentially removing files and settings manually, following the vendor’s website).
How do I uninstall patches/hotfixes?
- Under Control Panel click “View installed updates”.
- Use the wizard to uninstall a patch.
What is “wizard”?
A user interface feature that guides a user through a complex task by presenting a series of simple steps.
How do I enable or disable a feature in Windows?
In Control Panel under Programs and Features, toggle them on or off.
What does ‘single use license’ mean?
The software I’ve purchased can only be downloaded on a single computer.
Two things about EULA.
- End User Licensing Agreement.
- License governing the use of purchased software.
Three things about a “product key”.
- Purchased software is activated using it.
- A long string of numbers and characters printed on the box or disc case.
- It will generate a different “product ID” or “serial number”.
Four things about “product ID”.
- Also called a serial number.
- Product ID is used to obtain technical support.
- Usually displayed when the application starts up.
- Can be accessed using the “About” option on the “Help” menu.
What is a “concurrent license”?
A company can only allow a set number of users to access the software at a time.
What is “group use/site license”?
A company can install the software on an agreed number of computers for an unlimited number of users to use at the same time.
