- image of oneself as one wants to become
- how we should become according to society

- follows rules for sake of self interest
- follows rules in response to pleasant/unpleasant consequences and in response to authority figures
- type 1 (obedience and punishment, avoids unpleasantness for self)
- type 2 (exchange behavior for reward, some awareness of needs of others)

- type 3 (to be good in the eyes of oneself and others, wish to please, results in interactions with others
- type 4 (fulfilling agreed duties and conforming to authority and maintains social order for its own sake)

- type 5 (obligation to the law, legalistic, but individual rights take precedence over social contract)
- type 6 (internal morality, universal ethical principles which a person can choose to commit himself/herself to or not)
- type 6 is abiding by morals… whether someone sees you or not, you do the right thing
