component of grammar that deals with types of words and how words are formed out of smaller meaningful pieces and other words.
Lexicon
internalized vocabulary/ mental dictionary
FORM:
what a word sounds like when spoken
Meaning:
what the word refers to
Derivation:
Process of creating words out of other words
Affixes
the things attached to the stem
inflection
Creation of different grammatical forms of a word
Morpheme
the smallest linguistic unit with a meaning or grammatical function
Homophonous function
different words that sound the same
free morphemes
are morphemes the can be used as words all by themselves
bound morphemes
cannot stand alone (affixes)
bound roots
morphemes that are attached to a word but cannot stand as a word on their own RASP in raspberry. (bound to the rest of the word)
Content Morphemes
concrete meaning (refer to a physical attribute)
Function Morphemes
primarily grammatically relevant information about the word

can be schematically represented by tree diagram; indicates the steps involved in the formation of the word.
