Motivation Flashcards
(28 cards)
motivation
the wants or needs that direct behaviour toward a goal
intrinsic
arising from internal factors (for personal satisfaction)
extrinsic
arising from external factors (to receive something from others)
overjustification effect
intrinsic motivation is diminished when extrinsic motivation is given
instinct
a species-specific pattern of behaviour that is not learned
William James theory
behaviour was driven by a number of instincts, which aid survival
(critiqued because of the role of learning in shaping behaviour)
drive reduction theory
deviations from homeostasis create physiological needs, result in behaviour to meet the need and bring the system back to homeostasis
(emphasizes the role habits play)
Yerkes-Dodson Law
a simple task is performed best when arousal levels are relatively high and complex tasks are best performed when arousal levels are lower
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
hierarchy of needs that spans the spectrum of motives ranging from the biological to the individual to the social
(criticized for subjective nature)

PYY
ghrelin
hormone secreted by empty stomach; sends i’m hungry signals
orexin
hunger-triggering hormone secreted by hypothalmus
which neural arc secretes the appetite-stimulating hormones
arcuate nucleus
metabolic rate
amount of energy expended in a given period of time
set-point theory
asserts that each individual has an ideal weight, or set-point which is resistant to change (not received empirical support)
