multi hazardous environment Flashcards
name of the case study
Philippines
location of Philippines
a group of islands in south east Asia - on Pacific Ring of fire and typhoon belt
what level of development is the philipines
NEE/LIC high poverty rate :It has experienced rapid economic growth, especially in sectors like services and manufacturing.
Urbanisation is increasing, and there is industrial development in cities like Manila and Cebu.
Development indicators such as literacy rates and life expectancy have improved, though inequality and poverty remain challenges.
It has growing ties to the global economy (e.g., through remittances, BPO industry).
why do volcanoes form here?
Philipines near a destructive plate boandary, phillipines plate being subducted beneath the eurasion plate
example of volcano in philiipines
Mount Pinatubo erupted in 1991, 700 people died, 20,000 left homeless/buildings collapsed agriculyute land was ruined by falling ash
seizmic hazards in Philipines
occur along plate boundary and at fault lines where the plate has crushed under pressure.
example of earthquake that occured in the philipines
In 1976earthquake of may caused a tsunami - hit the coast of Moro Gulf upto 9 meters high affected 700km of coasline. 6,000 deaths - occured at midnight= made it worse more people. Poorly built caostal settlements, people fishing livelehoods, emergency releef slow
how many tropical storms does the philipines get each year
10
They develeop in the pacific ocean and move westword over the islands
give an exmaple of a tropical storm that occured
Typoon Xngsane went across Manila and the surrounding densly populated area in 2006. High winds and tourential rain destroyed homes causing flooding, landslides and 200 poeple died- cost 130 mill US dollars
name and example of Landslides
Gansailgon Landslide in2006 - triggered by heavy rainfall and small earthquakes = buiried a whole village = over 1000 deaths
reason for it was deforestation reduced slope stability and more soil saturation
how populated is the Philipines
densely populated around 340 people per km
communities response to hazrads
tehy understand the risk of teh hazards having experienced them before e.g widening rivers near settlements = reduced flooding risk , individuals resiliant to floods. in past response has been ore important that preperation.
from 2009 onwards what has changed in the Phillipines
policy on disaster ahs changed - incraese resilience b adaptation, mitigation and managment e.g land use planning / people not building in hazardous areas
Buiding embarkments to reduce flood risk from Tsunamis and tropical storms, incraesing public awarness and monitoring hazards and developing early warning systems = evacyation drills
