Q

Sensory register

A

Stimulus from environment passes to sensory register. Two main stores are iconic memory where visual info is coded visually and echoic memory where auditory info is coded acoustically.
Duration- less than half a sec
Capacity- High cap

However very little info passes into the memory system but if you pay attention all of it will pass through

Q

Short term memory

A

Coding- acoustically (baddeley)
Capacity- 7 +or - 2 (miller) so limited cap
Duration= 18 - 30 secs unless it is rehearsed (Peterson and Peterson)

Q

Maintenance rehearsal

A

Occurs when we repat material over and over again. We keep info in STM as long as we rehearse it. If rehearsal is long enough than it passes through the LTM

Q

Long Term Memory (LTM)

A

Coding- semantically (Baddeley)
Capacity- Unlimited
Duration- Very long as demonstrated in Bahrick’s study as people still remembered their graduating classes names and faces after 50 years

If we want to recall info back to STM we call it retrieval
