Multistore Model of Memory Flashcards
(18 cards)
Who proposed the multistore model of memory?
Atkinson and Shiffrin
How so do we move information to the Sensory Register?
Engaging in sensory stimuli
How do we encode the Sensory Register?
the 5 senses
What is the capacity of the sensory register?
10 items
What is the duration of the Sensory Register?
2 seconds
How do we move information to the STM?
Paying attention
How do we encode the STM?
Acoustically
what is the capacity of the STM?
5-9 items
What is the duration of the STM?
30 seconds
How do we move information to the LTM?
Maintenance Rehearsal and Elaborate Rehearsal
How do we encode the LTM?
Semantically
What is the capacity of the LTM?
Unlimited
What is the duration of the LTM?
Unlimited
Evidence to support the MSM
Baddeley - found the STM is encoded acoustically and the LTM is encoded semantically.
HM - couldn’t make LTM but could make STM - suggests two stores.
Evidence to conflict the LTM
KF - lost his verbal but not visual memories, suggests unitary store is too simplistic
Other theories to the MSM
Less holistic than other theories as only considers STM and LTM as one unitary store.
OTOH - only theory to consider both STM and LTM, holistic.
Usefulness of the MSM?
Useful for understanding revision and education through maintenance rehearsal.
Useful for understanding dementia, leaving post-it notes, etc.
Testability of the MSM
Baddeley tested in a lab - gathered good data.
OTOH, low mundane realism.
