Muscle Shapes Flashcards
Circular muscle
Example around the mouth
Convergent or Radiate
Combined arrangement of flat and fusiform.
Originate broad and converge onto a tendon.
Parallel
Muscle fibres run parallel to each other.
Long and not very strong but have good endurance.
Pennate
Have a large number of muscle fibres so are very strong but tire easily.
3/4 types
Bipennate
Two rows of muscle fibres facing in opposite diagonal directions with a central tendon.
Unipennate
Fibres insert in a diagonal direction in a tendon. Allows for greater strength.
Multipennate
Multiple rows of diagonal fibres.
A central tendon which branches into 2 or more tendons
Fusiform
More spindle shaped.
With the muscle belly being wider than the origin and insertion.
