Muscular system Flashcards
(11 cards)
what’s the name of the pairs muscles are arranged in?
antagonistic pairs
whats the agonist?
the contracting muscle responsible for causing movement
what’s the antagonist?
relaxing + lengthening muscle which allows the movement
whats the fixator?
a muscle that’s needed to stabilize one part of the body when the other moves
isometric contractions definitions
these are muscle contractions that DO NOT create movement
what’s an isometric contraction?
when the muscle contracts without lengthening or shortening. resulting in no movement occuring.
isotonic contraction definition
a muscular contraction which changes the length of the muscle which can occur in two ways:
concentric and eccentric
concentric contractions definition
when the muscle shortens under tension
eccentric contractions definition
when the muscle lengthens under tension
origin
part attached to the bone
insertion
part attached to the bone but moves the arm
