Musculoskeletal system Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are the types of joints?
- hinge
- ball & socket
What is adduction and abduction?
Adduction - movement towards the midline of the body
Abduction - movement away from the midline of the body
What are the pairs of planes, axis and and movements?
- frontal plane/ sagittal axis - cartwheel (ab/adduction)
- sagittal plane/ transverse axis - sommersault (flexion/extension)
- transverse plane/ vertical axis - twist (rotation)
FSC
STS
TVT
What are the joint actions in the sagittal plane/ transverse axis?
Shoulder and hip - flexion, extension, hyperextension
Elbow and knee - flexion, extension
Ankle - plantar flexion, dorsi flexion
What are the joint actions in the frontal plane/ sagittal axis?
Shoulder and hip - adduction, abduction
What are the joint actions in the transverse plane/ vertical axis?
Shoulder and hip - horizontal adbuction, horizontal adduction
How does the body move in terms of planes and axis?
It moves in one f the planes, about an axis
What are the agonist and antagonist muscles?
Agonist - the muscle responsible for the movement that is occuring
Antagonist - the musles that opposes the agonist to help produce a coordinate movement
What is a prime mover?
The main muscle group involved and initiating movement
What is the synergist?
The muscle that supports the smooth movement of the agonist
What is the fixator?
The muscle that contracts isometrically to hold the main structures of the body still (core support)
What is an isometric contraction?
When a muscle contracts without changing length that results in no movement
What is an isotonic contraction and what are the two types?
- when a muscle contracts to create movement
concentric - muscle shortens under tension
eccentric - muscle lengthens under tension
