Q

What is the hardest type of connective tissue?

A

Osteocytes

2
Q

What are the three types of osteocytes and what do they do?

A

1) osteoblasts- building.
2) osteoclasts- crushing.
3) osteocytes- mature.

3
Q

What is the bulk of bone formed by?

A

Osteons

4
Q

In the micro structure of the bone, what does the central canal contain?

A

Blood vessels, nerves and lymph vessels

5
Q

In the microstructure of the bone, what does the lamellae look like?

A

Growth rings on a tree

6
Q

What is compact bone and what is some of its qualities?

A

It is layers of matrix.

  • hard, dense and rigid
  • filled with minute holes and passageways
  • supply with nutrients and oxygen
  • blood vessels are located within holes
7
Q

What is cancellous bone and what are some of its qualities?

A
  • aka spongy bone
  • porous, thin and bony elements
  • contain bone marrow
8
Q

What type of bone has the nickname “spongy bone” ?

A

Cancellous bone

9
Q

Function of the skeleton?

A

1) Support: framework, gives shape and rigidly to the body.
2) Protection: protect soft delicate organs. (Skull protects brain)
3) movement: (locomotion) forms leavers to which muscles are attached.
4) manufacturing blood cells: red blood cells are manufactured in red bone marrow.
5) homeostasis: helps to maintain a constant level of calcium in the blood.
6) storage:!materials stored for later use. (Example calcium, fat & energy)

10
Q

In the long bone, where a outs is the yellow bone marrow located?

A

The diaphysis (bone shaft)

11
Q

On the long bone, what does the articulate cartilage do?

A

Protects end of bone and has a smooth surface
