the place where something happens or is set, or that has particular events associated with it

where a place is e.g. coordinates on a map

perception of place

the way in which place is viewed or regarded by people. this can influenced by media representation or personal experience

place

a location with meaning. places can be meaningful to individuals in ways that are personal or subjective. places can also be meaningful at a social or cultural level and these meanings may be shared by different groups of people

placemaking

the deliberate shaping of an environment to facilitate social interaction and improve a community's quality of life

sense of place

refers to the subjective and emotional attachment people have, through experience and knowledge of a particular area, may be particular events associated eg Trafalgar

agents of change

the people who impact on a place whether through living, working or trying to improve that place e.g. residents, community groups

endogenous factors

the characteristics of the place itself or factors which have originated internally e.g. location, land use, employment rates

exogenous factors

the relationship of one place with other places and the external factors which affect this. the demographic, socio-economic and cultural characteristics are shaped by shifting flows of ppl, resources, money/investment

infrastructure

relates to the services considered essential to enable or enhance living conditions. primarily consist of transport communications, comm. infrastructure and services (water supply/sewers) also, education system/healthcare provision/emergency services

why do places hold meaning

different groups of people may see places differently and have different scope to change these places

identity, belonging, well-being

what influences people's feelings towards and perceptions about different places

sense of belonging, age, gender, socio-economic status, religion, level of education and sexuality

factors that make people feel excluded

place of birth, status, language capability, social interactions, state of mind

near and far places

geographical distance or emotional connection with a particular place and how comfortable a person feels

experienced place

those places that a person has spent time in

media place

those a person has only read about or see on film

factors affecting the character of place

socio-economic, cultural, mobility, political, built environment, location, demographic, physical

external factors that affect relationship with a place

people, resources, money, ideas, migration
