Q

What is the weight of fuel in kg (with a specific gravity of 0.72) required for a trip of 180nm at a groundspeed of 90kt, given that the fuel burn of the aircraft is 20 US Gallons per hour?

A

109kg

  1. 90 kts = 90nm per hour (1 knot = 1nm per hour)
  2. REMEMBER: Speed Distance Time triangle. Divide Distance by Speed
  3. 180nm / 90 kts = 2 hours
  4. Burning 20 US gal per hour. 20 x 2 = 40 US Gallons for 2 hours
  5. 40 US gal x 3.785 = 151.4 liters
  6. 151.4 x 0.72 SG = 109 kg

Q

Approximately, What is the magnetic heading and groundspeed given that; Track 195॰T, TAS 110kt, Wind 305॰ 38kt, VAR 2॰W?

Use wizz wheel

A

216॰; 118kt

  1. Set the wizz wheel to wind direction of 305॰ and set blue speed dot to TAS 110 kts
  2. Use the speed down method, mark a dot 38kts down
  3. Turn the wizz wheel to track true of 195॰. Note the speed dot you marked moves to the WEST by 16॰. REMEMBER: WEST is BEST, EAST is LEAST
  4. Add 16॰ wind componet by moving the track to 211॰. Note the wind mark is now at 18॰.
  5. Using the drive indicator at the top, adjust the wheel so 195॰ matches the total wind drift of 18॰ i.e. align 195॰ to 18॰ drift. Note the heading now changes to 214॰
  6. Variation of 2॰ WEST (WEST is BEST) to factor in magentic heading over true heading so add 2॰ to track
  7. 216॰
  8. Note the TAS as 118kts
