Neoplasia Flashcards
Oncogene
Caner causing genes. Result in aberrant growth and differentiation.
Tumor Suppressor Genes
Keep cell growth in check, suppressing abnormal cellular growth.
Carcinoma in Situ
At this stage of malignant growth, the abnormal cells are present, but have not migrated from their location. Have not crossed basement membrane.
Neoplasia/Neoplasm
Abnormal mass of cells that grows at the expense of the host, and is caused in part by genetic abnormalities in the cells.
Adjuvant
Systemic treatment give in cancer treatment AFTER local (surgical) measures utilized.
Neoadjuvant
Adjuvant therapy administered BEFORE sugary. Works to atrophy tumor, to make surgery more successful
Invasive Carcinoma
Abnormal cells with increased motility. Crossed basement membrane into surrounding tissue.
Metastatic Carcinoma
Has left site of primary ccancer, traveled via lymph system and established itself elsewhere.
Anaplasia
Loss of differentiation. Cells that differentiate show that the normal pathway of development is at least partly intact.
