Neoplasia CIS/Tumor Staging Flashcards
FISH
used to dx malignancy
(flourescens in situ hybridization)
can see if things have translocated on a karyotype
punch biopsy
remove a small section of skin
poory margins
excision biopsy
remove area, good margins
incisional biopsy
remove part of the tumor, poor margins
shave biopsy
cut off top, shave off
poor margins
needl core biopsy
slender core of tissue removed with biopsy needle
bone marrow biopsy
dx for leukemia and lymphoma
aspiration biopsy cytology
microscopic study of cells obtained from superficial or internal lesions by suction via fine needle
TNM staging
T = tumor N = lymph node involvement M = metastases
Staging
based on size of primary lesion, extent of spread to lymph nodes, and presence of metastases (TNM)
Grading
based on the degree of differentiation of the tumor cells and number of mitoses and architectural features
little tiny cancer with no invasion
Stage 1
metastases to brain, liver, bone, lungs (distant metastases)
Stage 4
CA-125
ovarian cancer
HCG
trophoblastic tumors
testicular tumors
