Nervous & Autonomic Flashcards
(25 cards)
List the functions of the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS).
- PNS is known as the “feed or breed” system.
- Establishes a baseline for the body’s level of function.
- Has a slowing effect on the body
- Without it we would die
List the functions of the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS).
- SNS is known as the “fight or flight” system.
- Enables the body to react to stress.
- Digestive functions are slowed.
- We can live without it (until burnout occurs).
List the functions of the Autonomic Nervous System.
- Provides involuntary response to stresses on the body in attempt to maintain homeostasis.
- Provides involuntary control of smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, and endocrine glands.
In the PNS, what are the lengths of neuron 1 and neuron 2?
Neuron 1- Long
Neuron 2- Short
In both the PNS and SNS, what is the neurotransmitter at the GANGLION?
Acetylcholine (Ach)
In both the PNS and SNS, what is the receptor at the GANGLION?
Ach-N (nicotinic)
In the PNS, what is the neurotransmitter at the TARGET TISSUE?
Ach
In the PNS, what is the receptor at the TARGET TISSUE?
Ach-M
In the SNS, what is the neurotransmitter at the TARGET TISSUE?
Norepinephrine
In the SNS, what are the receptors at the TARGET TISSUE?
Alpha, Beta 1, Beta 2
What are the methods of deactivation of norepinephrine?
- Reuptake- Norepi is pumped out of synapse and back into the cell
- Enzymatic degradation- MAO/COMT
What chemical family do Epi, Norepi, and Dopamine belong to?
Catecholamines
What is an alternative name for the PNS?
Cholinergic Nervous System
What is an alternative name for the SNS?
Adrenergic Nervous System
What effects does the PNS have on the pupils?
Constricts
What effects does the SNS have on the pupils?
Dilates
What effects does the PNS have on the heart?
Decreases HR, Contractility, and Conduction speed
What effects does the SNS have on the heart?
Increase HR, Contractility, SV, and Conduction speed
What is the function of the Limbic System?
Emotions and emotional memories (rage, surprise, fear)
What are the four functions of the hypothalamus?
- Temperature control
- Fluid regulation
- Appetite
- SNS integration
What area of the brain is responsible for motor speech? i.e.- movement of lips, tongue, and vocal cords.
Broca’s
Where is the primary auditory center?
The temporal lobe
What is the function of white mater in the brain
Speeds up transmission of nerve signals
Why is the proper function of the brain very dependent on blood glucose levels?
Glucose is the brains main fuel source.
