Flashcards in nervous system Deck (34):
1

what is the central nervous system

The central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord.

2

Brain

The most complicated organ in the human body.Consists of three parts cereberum, cerebellum, medulla(brain stem).

3

cerebrum

Biggest part of the brain which controlls senses, imaginiation and thoughts

4

Cerebrellum

Second largest part of the brain which controlls motion ballance and ability to learn new things

5

Medulla or brain stem

The part of the brain connected to the spinal cord.it is responsible for breathing, digestion and heart beat

6

Peripheral Nervous system

Made up of sensory and motor neurons.it connects the central nervous system to the rest of the body. The peripheral nervous system also detects and responds to change

7

Sensory neurons

Detects change in the environment and sends messages to the central nervous system

8

Motor neuron

Nerve cells that causes an organ such as a muscle to respond to a stimulus

9

Nerves

all nerves are made from neurons that sense the world around you

10

Somatic nervous system

Collect information from sensory organs like the ears and eyes. Also coordinates movement of the body

11

Autonamic nervous system

Control System that acts largely unconsciously and regulates bodily functions such as the heart rate, digestion and urination

12

Cell body

Spherical part of the neuron that contains the nucleus.

13

Dentrites

Pick up messages from other cells and takes that information to the cell body

14

Axon

transmits electrical impulses away from the cell body and then sends them to other cells

15

Homeostasis

The ability of a living organism to maintain a stable internal environment

16

negative feedback

Negative feedback is a response that occurs in the opposite direction to the stimulus.

17

Positive feedback

Results in the response going in the same direction

18

Stimulus response model

Stumulus-rececptor-control center-effector-response

19

Multicellular organism

Multicellular organism -system -organs -tissues -cells

20

Receptors

A specialised cell or group of nerve endings that responds to sensory stimuli.

21

Sense organs

A specialised structure that detects stimuli

22

Themoreceptors

Receptors that detects temperature changes

23

Mechanorecpetors

Receptors that detect touch, presure and motion.

24

Chemorecptors

Detects concentration of chemicals

25

Photoreceptors

Recptors that detect light

26

Receptors

Receptors are nerve cells that a which can be found on your skin, eye, nose, ears, tongue.

27

Central nervous system functions

The brain is centre of our thoughts and is the origin control over body movements. The spine controls transfers of neural signals.Combines sensory information and coordinates conscious and unconscious activity.

28

Endocrine system

Composed of endocrine glands that release hormones into the blood stream. The hormones are then transported through the circulatory system to the effects which causes a response

29

Hormones

Chemical substances that are produced by glands and circulated in the blood stream

30

Reticular formation

A network of neurons that open and close to increase and decrease information to the brain.

31

Thalamus

Part of the brain which all sensory information except smell passes before going to other parts of the brain.

32

Interneuron

A nerve that nervous impulses through the nervous system. They give the link between sensory and motor neurons.

33

Pons

Part of the brain involved in regulating sleep, sexual arousal and Breathing.coordinates some body movement

34

Myelin

A white insulating substance that covers the axon and speeds up the process
