nervous system part 4 Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are the types of cranial nerves?
Sensory, Motor, and Sensory, motor and parasympathetic
What is the function of the Olfactory nerve (CNI)?
Sense of smell
Located in olfactory epithelium, passes through cribriform plate of ethmoid bone, synapses in olfactory bulb neurons.
What is the function of the Optic nerve (CNII)?
Vision
Fibers arise from retina of the eye, passes through optic canal of orbit, converges to form optic chiasma.
What is the function of the Oculomotor nerve (CNIII)?
Eye movement and parasympathetic pupil constriction
Fibers extend from ventral midbrain and pass through bony orbit (superior orbital fissure) to eye.
What is the function of the Trochlear nerve (CNIV)?
Eye movement
Fibers emerge from dorsal midbrain and pass through bony orbit (superior orbital fissure) to eye.
What are the divisions of the Trigeminal nerve (CNV)?
Ophthalmic (V1), Maxillary (V2), Mandibular (V3)
What is the function of the Ophthalmic division (V1) of the Trigeminal nerve?
Convey sensory impulses from skin of forehead, upper eyelid, nose, nasal cavity mucosa, and lacrimal gland.
What is the function of the Maxillary division (V2) of the Trigeminal nerve?
Convey sensory impulses from nasal cavity mucosa, palate, upper teeth, skin of the cheek, upper lip, and lower eyelid.
What is the function of the Mandibular division (V3) of the Trigeminal nerve?
Convey sensory impulses from anterior tongue (except taste buds), lower teeth, skin of the chin, and temporal region of scalp; supply motor fibers to muscles of mastication.
What is the function of the Abducens nerve (CNVI)?
Primarily motor
Innervates lateral rectus muscle.
What is the function of the Facial nerve (CNVII)?
Mixed nerves; chief motor nerves of face
Ability to taste; has 5 major branches: Temporal, Zygomatic, Buccal, Mandibular, Cervical.
What is the function of the Vestibulocochlear nerve (CNVIII)?
Mostly sensory
Involved in hearing and balance.
What is the function of the Glossopharyngeal nerve (CNIX)?
Mixed nerves; motor fibers innervate part of tongue and pharynx for swallowing, and parasympathetic fibers innervate parotid salivary glands.
What is the function of the Vagus nerve (CNX)?
Motor fibers innervate pharynx and larynx for swallowing; parasympathetic fibers supply heart, lungs, and abdominal viscera.
What is the function of the Accessory nerve (CNXI)?
Motor fibers innervate trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles.
What is the function of the Hypoglossal nerve (CNXII)?
Motor fibers innervate the tongue
Contributes to swallowing and speech.
What are the functions of the cranial nerves?
Olfaction, Vision, Eye movements, Facial sensation, Muscle of mastication, Pupil constriction, Hearing, Equilibrium sense, Salivation, and Tongue movement.
