Flashcards in Neuro path Deck (12):
1

Acute (seconds to minutes to hours) injuries to brain

– Vascular disorders

– Effects of trauma

– Some inflammatory disorders

2

Subacaute (hours to days to a week or two) injuries to brain

– Infections

– Rising intracranial pressure

3

Astrocytes

supportive, nutritional

4

Oligodendrocytes

supportive, insulating (myelin)

5

What can Regenerate

glia or microglia

6

Hydrocephalus

Communicating see in

?Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)

Elderly,brainatrophy,ataxia/incontinence/dementia:many respond to LP / shunt

7

Communicating

Pseudotumour cerebri (‘Benign’ Intracranial Hypertension)

Female, obese, headache / vision loss: many respond to LP(s),

diuretics, corticosteroids, shunt

8

Obstuctive hydrocephalus

– ‘Non-communicating’

hydrocephalus caused by obstruction of CSF flow in brain (e.g., tumour, hematoma)

9

‘Communicating Hydrocephalus

caused by obstruction to CSF flow in subarachnoid space or at the arachnoid granulations (pus, blood, fibrosis)

10

‘Compensatory’ or ‘ex vacuo’ hydrocephalus

Dilatation of ventricles as a consequence of loss of brain mass (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease)

11

Subfalcine herniation

most common cerebral herniation pattern, is characterised by displacement of the brain (typically the cingulate gyrus) beneath the free edge of the falx cerebri due to raised intracranial pressure.
