Q

Who developed the modern wine industry of New York?

A

In 1957, Dr Konstantin
Frank, after years spent experimenting with Riesling and Chardonnay scions grafted onto the
hardiest of rootstocks, succeeded in over-wintering his own vines whilst native and hybrid
vines succumbed to the cold. To emphasise the point, he bought land, planted vineyards and
opened his own winery, Vinifera Wine Cellars.
He also championed the state’s now-signature variety, Riesling
