why do we give newborns vitamin K?
Vitamin K helps blood to clot normally & synthesized in our guts BUT babies gut is sterile so they do NOT make vitamin K & we don’t know when this will start
If parents do NOT want vitamin K it is important to help advise parents against what?
circumcision in male infants
How do we administer Vitamin K to newborn?
1) Single dose vial → NEVER inject more than 0.5 mL into newborn
2) Draw up with filter needle to ensure NO glass gets into syringe to be injected
3) Inject into vastus lateralis
what is hepatitis B vaccine & how do we give it? (3)
1) First vaccine given to baby (3 dose series)
2) 0.5 mL injection into vastus lateralis
3) Given at birth, 1-2 months, 6-18 months
list the sx of respiratory distress in newborns
1) nasal flaring (first sign)
2) grunting
3) tachypnea
4) substernal retractions
5) seesaw respirations
6) cyanosis (late sign)
why do babies grunt when in resp distress?
it natures CPAP → baby is trying to force more air down deep
why are babies tachypneic when in resp distress?
they are trying to take in faster breaths to compensate for not getting enough O2
where would you see substernal restractions when baby is in resp distress?
pulling at the rib cage
how would seesaw respirations present?
you will see pulling at the chest that goes down to the abdomen
list points about carseat safety (7)
1) Must be correct size for newborn
2) Rear-facing in the back seat
3) Watch buckle!! Level of armpit!!
4) No more than 2 fingers between baby & straps
5) No snowsuits, bulky jackets under straps
6) Make sure that it is level in car
7) Anchor with tether & use base
