Flashcards in NHB drugs Deck (16):
1

Stroke - preventative and treatment

Treatment for occlusive; clot busting drugs such as alteplase, desmoteplase. Hypothermia may reduce damage.
Prevention; statins, aspirin, ACE inhibitors etc

2

Drugs for anxiety

Benzodiazepines (diazepam), barbiturates, buspirone (5HT-1A agonist), B-blockers and anti-depressants

3

Insomnia

Benzodiazepines, TCAs, anti-histamines, melatonin agonists (ramelteon)

4

Blocks GABA reuptake

Tiagabine

5

Blocks GABA metabolism

Vigabatrin

6

Barbiturates

Thiopental, phenobarbital

7

Anti-epileptic drug classes

Na+ channel inhibitor (phenytoin), Ca++ channel inhibitors (ethosuximide), enhance GABAergic transmission; decrease breakdown (vigabatrin), decrease reuptake (tiagabine), enhance receptor effects (benzodiazepines/barbiturates).

8

uses of 5-HT drugs

Reuptake inhibitors = anti-depressants
antagonists = anti emetics, antipsychotics
agonists = migraine

9

Drugs for depression

TCAs (imipramine), SSRIs (fluoxetine, citalopram), SNRIs (venlafaxine), MAOIs (tranylcypromine), RIMAs (meclobamide)

10

DA antagonist used for schizophrenia

Haloperidol, chlorpromazine

11

Drugs for general anxiety disorder

Benzodiazepines or buspirone

12

Drugs for panic disorder

Benzodiazepines, antidepressants

13

Drugs for phobias

Benzodiazepines

14

Drugs for PTSD

Anti-depressants or B-blockers

15

Drugs for OCD

Antidepressants

16

Atypical antidepressants

Buproprion; action via DAT
Mertazapine; antagonises monoamine receptors
Nefazodone; antagonises 5HT and a1 receptors.
Agomelating; agonist at MT1 and 2
Vortioxetine; SSRI and 5-HT agonists.
