Nomenclature Flashcards
Steps to IUPAC naming convention:
- Identify the longest carbon chain containing the highest order functional group
- Number the chain
- Name the substituents
- Assign a number to each substituent
- Complete the name
Parent chain:
the longest carbon chain containing the highest order functional group and the chain that becomes the root of the name
Numbering the chain:
carbon number 1 is the one closest to the highest order functional group
heteroatoms are:
atoms besides hydrogen (oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous, or halogens) that carbon can bond to
oxidation state increases with more bonds to these and decreases with more bonds to hydrogens
The more oxidized a carbon is…
the higher priority it has within the molecule
If there is a tie between assigning higher priority between a double and triple bond….
the double bond wins (takes precedence)
Substituents are:
- functional groups that are not assigned to the parent chain
- the name will be placed at the beginning of the compound name as a prefix followed by the name of the longest chain
