The owner of the manor house and the land in the village (and possibly surrounding areas)

Marcher Lords

The border regions of England were called the marches. The lords who controlled them therefore became known as the marcher lords

Comes from the words 'shire' and 'reeve'. sheriffs were appointed for each shire and were able to hold court and try local civil and criminal matters

The formal public acknowledgement by which a feudal tenant or vassal declared himself to be the man/vassal of their lord, owing him fealty and service

A tenant-worker who was free and paid rent for their land - rather than giving service. They could move to other villages towns if they wanted
