What steps must a notary follow for an acknowledgment?
Verify ID, confirm document is complete, ask ‘Do you acknowledge signing this voluntarily?’, complete certificate, record in journal.
What must a notary do if asked to notarize a blank document?
Refuse. Explain it must be fully completed before notarization.
What must be recorded in the notary journal?
Date, time, type of act, signer’s name, ID, document type, fee, signatures of signer and notary.
What if your notary seal is lost or stolen?
Notify the Attorney General immediately and stop notarizing until replaced.
What is the correct oath wording for a jurat?
‘Do you solemnly swear or affirm that the statements are true to the best of your knowledge and belief?’
When must a notary refuse to act?
If the signer isn’t present, ID is missing, or document is incomplete.
What’s the difference between an acknowledgment and a jurat?
Acknowledgment confirms voluntary signature; jurat confirms truth of contents.
How does a notary become authorized for RON?
Apply to the AG, receive approval, use compliant platform, and follow rules.
Can you notarize a document you don’t understand?
No. The notary must understand the document to ensure completeness.
Can a Social Security card be used as ID for notarization?
No. Only valid government-issued photo ID or personal knowledge is acceptable.
