Nutrition Flashcards
What does LDL (low density lipoprotein) do?
carries cholesterol to the walls of the arteries, forming atherosclerotic plaques.
Composition ratio of LDL (low density lipoprotein)?
higher percentage of cholesterol and a lower percentage of apoprotein
Normal LDL level
190: Very high
*ratio of LDL/HDL is more important
Total Cholesterol
cell membranes, steroid hormones and bile acids. In the blood, cholesterol is carried by three different lipoproteins: HDL, LDL and VLDL.
Normal Lvl of Total Cholesterol
A measurement less than 200 mg/dL is desirable
VLDL - Very Low Density Lipoprotein
triglycerides/5
Normal range of VLDL - Very Low Density Lipoprotein
No “normal” ranges, but VLDL level inversely related to HDL levels, making an elevated VLDL a predictor of CHD.
Function/Storage of Triglycerides
Main portion of VLDL,
Stored in fat cells for energy (main form of lipid storage).
Rise after fatty meal.
Density of chylomicrons relative to other lipoproteins
Lowest density lipoprotein.
Normal levels of Triglycerides
Normal: /=500 mg/dL
Normal Chylomicron lvls
normally not measured
What is Lipoprotein A [LP(a)], what can it cause/how?
LDL-like particle with structure similar to plasminogen. Contributes to atherosclerosis and is also prothrombotic because it can displace plasminogen from its binding sites. Does not respond to statin therapy.
Normal lvls of Lipoprotein A [LP(a)]?
PA14 has “Normal: <30 mg/dL,” but neither Current nor other required texts place a number here.
