Flashcards in Nutrition an diabetes Deck (15):
1

Aims of nutritional management

good glycemic control, minimise macOS/microvascular complications, CVD risk reduction, behaviour changes

2

describe insulin regime of t1dm patient

basal/bolus: have a basal long acting background insulin e.g. glargine with a rapid short acting insulin as a bolus after meals e.g. NonoRapid
Twice daily mixed insulin: requires fixed and consistent intake of carb
continuous subcut insulin infusion (pump therapy): continuous infusion of rapid insulin per meal/snack

3

why count carbs in t1dm

insulin injected and glucose injected need to be well matched to prevent hypo/hyperglycaemia

4

5 day structured program for T1DM

DAFNE - dose adjustment for normal eating

5

DESMOND

6 self management programmes for T2DM

6

4 week program for T1DM

BERTIE

7

aim of nutritional management in t2dm

weight loss, regular activity, low GI diets

8

Glycaemic index and what affects it

carb ranking on scale to which foods raise blood glucose after eating
affected by:
type of sugar, cooking method, processing, other food components

9

low GI foods

pasta, lentils, beans, quinoa, tortilla

10

high GI foods

potatoes, white bread, cornflakes, watermelon, sugary drinks

11

physical activity benefits

improved glycemic control, increased insulin senstivity, increase in fat free mass, decrease in visceral adipose tissue

12

Exercise targets

150 mins per week/75 mins high intensity

13

weight management

weight reduction and energy restriction has best prognosis
metabolic surgery e.g. gastric bypass have best outcomes if within 12 months of diagnosis

14

gestational diabetes

requires tight control incase of maternal/fetal risks

15

difficulty in inpatient diabetes management

uncontrollable bg due to sepsis/infection, encourage regular meals and snacks
