OMM FRIENDSHIP Flashcards
(7 cards)
Why is friendship important in the novel?
It’s rare and unusual during the harsh times of the Great Depression.
It gives characters a sense of hope, purpose, and identity.
Steinbeck contrasts true friendship (George & Lennie) with the emotional emptiness of other characters on the ranch.
George and Lennie’s Friendship
Their relationship is central to the story—built on mutual care and protection.
George looks after Lennie and keeps him out of trouble.
Lennie gives George companionship and purpose, even though it’s difficult.
🗣️ Key quotes:
George: “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world.”
Lennie: “Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you.”
Their dream is rooted in friendship: owning a farm together and being safe.
Candy and His Lost Companionship
Candy’s only friend is his old dog, and its death devastates him.
His desire to join George and Lennie’s dream shows how badly he wants connection and purpose.
🗣️ Candy: “I won’t have no place to go, an’ I can’t get no more jobs.”
🤝 Crooks and the Desire for Friendship
Crooks pretends not to care about others, but his loneliness is clear.
He momentarily opens up when Lennie talks to him and wants to be included in the dream.
🗣️ Crooks: “A guy needs somebody—to be near him.”
🚫 Barriers to Friendship
Racism, sexism, and class divide the characters.
Most men are suspicious of others and don’t trust anyone.
True friendship is seen as unrealistic or doomed, especially in such a harsh world.
🎯 What Steinbeck Shows About Friendship:
Friendship is rare but valuable—a form of resistance to loneliness and despair.
Even strong friendships can be destroyed by outside forces (e.g. society, fear, violence).
In the end, George has to make a painful choice to protect Lennie—raising questions about loyalty, mercy, and sacrifice.
Techniques Used:
Dialogue – Reveals closeness and emotional support between George and Lennie.
Symbolism – The dream farm represents a shared hope based on friendship.
