Opthalmology Flashcards
Argyll Robertson Pupil
and what they are associated with
The pupils are small, irregular, NON-reactive to light and constrict when focussed on a near object
“accommodate but don’t react”
-associated with syphilis
also, diabetes, midbrain lesions: sarcoidosis, encephalitis, Parinaud syndrome
Absent red reflex and lens may look like cracked ice
Cataract
Findings of senile macular degeneration
Drusen (characteristic yellow deposits) in macula
Exudative changes resulting from blood and fluid under macula
Stage 1 HT retinopathy
Arteriolar narrowing and tortuosity
Stage II HT retinopthy
AV nicking, silver wiring
Stage III HT retinopathy
dot, blot and flame haemorrhages
Cotton wool spots (soft exudates)
Hard exudates
Microanuerysms
Stage IV HT retinopathy
Papillodema
Background diabetic retinopathy
Microaneurysms, macular oedema, hard exudates, haemorrhages
Pre-proliferative diabetic retinopathy
Cotton wool spots, venous beading
Proliferative diabetic retinopathy
Neovascularisation, vitreous haemorrhage
Glaucoma findings
Increased cup to disc ration (>0.5)
Haemorrhages
Central retinal artery occlusion
Pale retina with swelling or oedema
Cherry red spot
Central retinal vein occlusion
Widespread haemorrhage throughout the retina with swelling and oedema
“stormy sunset”
Papilloedema
Blurring of disc margins, cupping and swelling of the disc, haemorrhages, exudates, distended veins
Cataract
Absent red reflex
Lens may look like cracked ice
