Flashcards in Organic Chemistry Deck (13):
What do hydrocarbons only contain?
They only contain hydrogen and carbon atoms.
What do alkanes have?
They all have single c-c bonds.
What are alkanes?
Alkanes are the simplest type of hydrocarbon you can get.
What is a hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon is any compound that is formed from carbon and hydrogen atoms only.
What are the first four alkanes?
Methane, Ethane, Propane and Butane.
What changes in the hydrocarbon as the chain gets longer?
The Hydrocarbon properties change.
When does complete combustion occur?
It occurs when there is enough oxygen.
What is the equation for complete combustion?
Hydrocarbon + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water.
What is crude oil?
Crude oil is a mixture of lots of different hydrocarbons.
How are hydrocarbon fractions separated?
1} The oil is heated.
2} In the column there is a temperature gradient.
3} The longer hydrocarbons have boiling points. They condense back into liquids and drain out of the column.
4} You end up with the crude oil mixture separated out into different fractions.
What are uses of crude oil in modern life?
It provides most of the fuels for most modern transport. Also, the petrochemical industry uses some of the hydrocarbons from crude oil.
What does cracking mean?
Cracking means splitting up long-chain hydrocarbons.
