Flashcards in Organisms in the Environment and feeding relationships Deck (14):
1

Define population

All organisms of one species in a habitat

2

Define community

All different species in a habitat

3

Define habitat

An area where an organism lives

4

Define ecosystem

All organisms living in an area and all non-living conditions

5

Steps to use quadrats to estimate population sizes

1) Place quadrat at random point on ground in area
2) Count organisms in that area
3) Multiply by total area of habitat

6

What is a quadrat?

Square frame enclosing a certain area

7

What does it mean to 'sample distribution of organisms'?

To find how organisms spread across their habitat. For example, how species change from a hedge toward a field

8

Steps to use quadrats to sample distribution of organisms

1) Mark out a line in area
2) Lay quadrats in that line, called a transect
3)Collect data along transect

9

What is a producer

Organism that makes its own food using energy from the sun

10

Give an example of a decomposer

Bacteria

11

What does each bar on a pyramid of biomass represent?

Mass of living material

12

In a food chain, what percentage of the total energy becomes biomass

10%

13

Define biomass

Living matter used as fuel

14

3 ways energy is lost in a food chain

Lost to the surroundings as heat
Some parts aren't eaten - energy isn't taken in
Some material is indigestible
