Q

Compare the two main mechanisms for bacterial resistance?

A

Intrinsic- when the bacteria has always had resistance.

Acquired resistance- resistance genes have been acquired:

  • Altered target site
  • Enzymatic inactivation.

12
Q

What type of infection would we use to describe a dental abscess?

A

Endogeneous infections- the bacteria originate from our own flora.

They are a mix of anaerobic and aerobic bacteria.

16
Q

How do we treat a salivary gland infection?

A

Metrondiazole to cover the mixed anerobes

AND

Flucloxacillin to cover S.aureus.

17
Q

Compare sepsis and septic shock.

A

Sepsis- Life threatening organs dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection.

Septic shock- A subset of sepsis with circulatory and cellular/ metabolic dysfunction associated with a higher risk of mortality.

18
Q

What is SIRS.

A

Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome.

This occurs when 2 or more of the following are achieved:

Temperature <36 or >38

Pulse >90/min

Respiratory rate >20/min

WCC <4 or > 12.

19
Q

What is antimicrobial stewardship?

A

Aiming to measure and improve how antibiotics are prescribed by clinicans and used by patients. e.g. we switched amoxicillin to penicillin V for first line.

20
Q

Name the bacteria involved in a periodontal abscess.

A

Anerobic streptococci

Prevotella intermedia.
