palliative care Flashcards
what is the aim of palliative care?
relieve suffering, improve quality of life for patients & families (for patients with serious life threatening illnesses)
is palliative care just for at end of their life?
no, a large amount of palliative care is caring for people much earlier in their illness (help control their symptoms)
what is a common misconception of palliative care?
it starts to happen when you’re dying and it replaces all other care, but that’s not true - you receive over long period of time for people with serious illnesses and it happens along with other care
what is realistic medicine?
an approach to healthcare that aims to put the patient at the centre of decisions made about their care. Shared decision making and a personalised approach to care are key elements of practising Realistic Medicine.
