What is it

Also known as Democratic leadership
Employers invite employees to take part in organisations, decision making.
Used in social care

Collective

Decisions taken by groups.
Responsibility on group.
Group must develop clear lines of authority that define the responsibility of each members.

Democratic or participative

Encourages participation of all members but decision overall is with leader.
Leader must communicate it back to group and resolve possible objections.

Autocratic

Solutions brainstormed together, responsibility balls upon leader alone.
Allows organisation to benefit from collective input provided by all employees while making the decisions reasonably fast.
Very like democratic but autocratic leadership is obtained much faster.

Consensus

Leader gives up control and responsibility of decision making leaving it entirely to the group.
Decision must be approved by entire group for it to go ahead.
Decision has to be modified to remove and objectionable features so that the majority can agree with it.

Criticisms

Members may feel, social pressure to confirm.
Decision making takes longer.
High unnecessary costs
